Those of you familiar with the myth of Mercury know that he represents the intellect, communication, commerce as well as mischief.  When someone is called Mercurial it may not be a compliment - since Mercury is changeable and lightning fast.  After all we can change our minds in an instant when we want to, right?

Where do we see that in our hands?  Oh, do check your littlest finger for that detail.  Our pinkies pack a punch.  It is the outside edge of our hands and so it faces the world for us opposite our thumb which makes things happen for us.  Mercury shows us how we see the world and how the world might experience us. 

Does it have a pointed tip?  Well then you experience flashes of intuitive knowing about a person or situation that logic can't match for speed in comprehending.  Is it squared off and solid?  Well you need time to process your feelings and let the world wait while you chew on information and digest it at your own pace.  Is it set apart from the other fingers with a big gap?  You can be ahead of the curve when it comes to figuring things out but that leaves you out on your own for a while with new insights and ideas waiting for others to catch up.  These are just the beginning of what our hands can say... back to Mercury and the myth.

Mercury's symbol is the caduceus - the same symbol used in the medical profession. 

What's so fascinating about this symbol is that the wings of Mercury are there at the top.  Then you have the two snakes winding their way up the center staff.  What I love about the picture is it is so packed with information about what our Mercury impulses are and do for us. 

Mercury in the myth is known as the soul shepherd - transporting people from life to death.  The wings are there to signify travel or journey.  Those two snakes make a similar pattern to the double helix in our DNA but they also symbolize the electrical energy moving up our spinal cord to the brain where the mind uses the information to make a journey.  In the eastern world it is known as Kundalini rising. 

But it's also a good measurement for how much energy or life force is moving through our bodies.  Our spine animates our entire when it receives the impulses to move, stretch, breathe and live.   The trickster part of Mercury is in the fact that our mind can fool us...

You see they are finally starting to realize that healing and medicine is a whole body prospect - not separated into parts by symptoms.  Traditional medicine and science has spent the last few hundred years learning how to do extraordinary things bit by bit - finally getting to the level of heart transplant, prosthetics for amputees that can move using our brain.  No small achievement at all!

Yet now they are starting to see the wisdom in integrating the whole body into medicine.  Holistic medicine and branches of this are showing up even in places outside of herbal California!  It's because we recognize that we can't separate our mind, body and heart from what created a health crises situation and what will most benefit the person in recovery.
